Sticky Monkey Flower

Sticky Monkey Flower
Mimulus species
There are seventy-seven varieties of Monkey Flower.
The Sticky Monkey Flower is a small plant that grows in many locations from
May to August, but can bloom all year. They are in the snapdragon family.
The blossoms of Monkey Flowers are similar to the shape of a laughing monkey
face. The yellowish-orange flowers flare outward to form two upper lips and
three lower lips.
The Sticky Monkey Flower is found where there
is deep moisture. The leaves produce a sticky resin that helps the plant contain
its moisture. The sticky resin helps the plant during droughts.
The stem and leaves taste salty and were used
by Native Americans as a flavor enhancer. The raw leaves are bitter but cooking
them improves their flavor. The cool liquid inside the plant is useful for
soothing burns and skin irritations.
